Published: 7 June 2024

Make sure you’re ready to vote in the General Election General Election

There’s less than four weeks to go before the UK goes to the polls in the General Election.

Polling stations in Exeter will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day of the General Election – Thursday 4 July.

But people will only be able to vote if they are on the electoral register. For those not currently on it, there’s still time to register. The deadline is Tuesday 18 June. Just visit the GOVUK website to register.

On the day of the election, everyone voting at a polling station will need to ensure they show photo ID.

There are a number of accepted forms of ID that can be shown at the polling station. This includes:

  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Blue Badge (with a photo)
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

For a full list of accepted ID, along with more information about the requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID, go to

However not everyone chooses to vote at a polling station. In Exeter thousands opt for a postal vote. Postal vote applications are now open, with the deadline for applications being Wednesday 19 June. To apply for a postal vote, also visit the GOV.UK website
