Leisure Jobs Join Exeter Leisure

Exeter City Council’s in-house leisure service, Exeter Leisure, is looking for people to join its dynamic and progressive team.

Based across a number of sites in the city - including the brand new modern leisure centre St Sidwell’s Point, when it opens its doors later this spring - Exeter Leisure is providing a unique opportunity to work in a range of rewarding and fulfilling roles within the health and wellbeing sector.

St Sidwell’s Point will be the UK’s first Passivhaus leisure centre, featuring a 25m, eight-lane competition pool, 20m learner pool, confidence splash pool, 100-station Technogym powered gym, two group exercise studios with Les Mills classes, indoor cycling studio, café, crèche, soft play area and luxury rooftop spa.

Recruitment has started for the brand new centre, with a recruitment day planned to take place on March 2. With a range of different opportunities available, we speak to three people already in post to find out what they love about their roles.


Swimming Teacher - £17.48 - £18.44 per hour

Exeter Leisure is looking to train the next generation of swimming teachers and seeking the right individuals to work in this rewarding role teaching young children an essential life skill. The post holder will deliver swimming lessons to all ages and abilities using the Swim England’s learn to swim framework whilst providing a warm, friendly, professional atmosphere and high standard of customer care at all times. Training is provided.

"I’ve been a swimming teacher for two years and I love seeing children progress from non-swimmers into confident, skilled swimmers," said Katie.

"I love swimming myself and I used to be a club swimmer when I was younger so this role was a perfect opportunity to combine my passion with work. I love being able to put a smile on children’s face and every day is different, makes a difference, and above all fun”.

Group Exercise Instructor - £16.58 - £17.25 per class

Group Exercise Instructor - £16.58 - £17.25 per class

Instructors play a key role in delivering a positive experience for members and Exeter Leisure is looking for various types of class instructors from aqua and yoga, to strength and cardio. Exeter Leisure is also looking for dance-based classes and pre/postnatal offerings. There are many Les Mills classes on offer; if you are certified in any of the following programmes Exeter Leisure would love to hear from you! Bodyattack, Bodybalance, Bodycombat, Bodypump, Bodystep, Barre, Grit, RPM and The Trip. Training also provided.

“Being a group exercise instructor is a really rewarding role," said Michelle.

"Not many people get to use their passion in their day to day job and I’m lucky I get to share my love for fitness every day. It never really feels like work when you’re working out with people that become your friends!

"As a working mum, the job flexibility allows me to teach around my children, too, so I can be a role model to them while they’re growing up. Inspiring the younger generation to be active is really important to me”.

Exeter Leisure is also looking for people with a passion for their community and who want to help others get active. It provides full training for the National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification (NPLQ) and offers further career development within the dynamic leisure sector. The post holder will ensure the safety and enjoyment of centre users and partake in the management of all aspects of daily activities in the centre. Providing a warm, friendly, professional atmosphere and high standard of customer care at all times.

“I really enjoy my job," said Easton.

"Every day I get to meet new people, learn new skills and act as a role model for those around me. Being a lifeguard gives me a lot of job satisfaction – I’m responsible for the safety of everyone in the pool and I feel an immense sense of pride in what I do. The role is also really flexible and I have been able to work around my studies, which is great.”
