A leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls has been backed by the City Council.

White Ribbon’s mission is to prevent violence against women and girls by addressing its root causes.

It aims to change long established and harmful attitudes, systems and behaviours around masculinity that perpetuate gender inequality and men’s violence against women.

Cllr Josie Parkhouse, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Physical Activity, attended a White Ribbon event in London on Friday 25 November, on behalf of the City Council.

She said: “I was very pleased to be able to represent Exeter City Council at this very important event to promote the work of this excellent charity.

“In Exeter our free This Girl Can sessions in Wonford have provided a space for women and girls to have the confidence to try out a range of physical activities in a safe environment.

“A lot of work has also taken place to improve the safety of women at night in Exeter.

“A Safe Space has recently opened in the city centre, which provides women and girls with a secure place to wait for transport home and access any help or assistance they may require or raise any concerns they may have.

“I’m very proud of these initiatives in Exeter and also to support and raise awareness of the excellent work of the White Ribbon charity.”

As part of the Safer Streets funding 32 CCTV cameras were recently installed in the city centre in areas where people said they felt most unsafe.

The Community Safety Partnership has just been awarded further funding under Safer Streets 4 bidding round which will allow further cameras along transit routes to a wider area of the city that has a particularly high footfall in the evening and night time.
