A children's play park remains closed while the council continues its efforts to evict those taking part in an unauthorised encampment at King George V Playing Field at Countess Wear.

In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesman for the city council said: “The council’s legal team attended court on Wednesday morning and were granted a possession order.

“The order requires those occupying the site to vacate the land immediately.

“The order has been served, but so far those taking part in an unauthorised encampment at King George V Playing Field have refused to leave.

“The police have been called to assist in the eviction process. Once the site is clear, council staff will be able to start the process of cleaning up the site.

“We will inform the public when we are able to reopen the play area, which has remained closed over recent days.”
