Published: 29 May 2020

Role of refuse worker shown on TV Refuse and recycling driver Tony Hargreaves

The crucial role that waste and recycling workers play in keeping the nation going during the coronavirus pandemic has been captured in a revealing video diary.

City Council refuse and recycling driver Tony Hargreaves, who has been with the authority for over 40 years, filmed the piece for BBC Spotlight.

The video diary was filmed by Tony and his colleagues over a number of days.

The films highlights just how crucial the role is and how workers in the sector are keeping the country ticking over by collecting household waste. It also shines a light on the importance of recycling during these times and how the crews have been faced with much more waste and recycling because people have been staying home.

Tony and his crew are also seen receiving a number of thank you messages and gifts from kind-hearted people across the city.
