Ukrainian refugees meet the Lord Mayor at Exeter Guildhall

Published: 26 April 2022

Ukrainian refugees have met up in Exeter with people from their homeland.

The meeting took place at a coffee morning hosted by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Trish Oliver, at the city’s historic Guildhall.

The coffee mornings are put on to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity, Inclusive Exeter.

Cllr Oliver described the encounter as “serendipitous”.

She said: “Two Ukrainians who had just arrived in Exeter came along with their host. Olena knew some English but Misha didn’t. I was delighted when another Ukrainian family came in and the dad, Dmystro, was able to talk to Misha and his mum in Ukrainian. Their faces lit up and it was a heart-warming scene!”

Also at the event was Joe, working with Exeter Friends of Ukraine and just back from delivering a van full of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

“They all enjoyed chatting to eat other, to a background of beautiful music and with delicious homemade cake provided by Inclusive Exeter,” said Cllr Oliver. “A lovely way to end the coffee mornings for my mayoral term.”

Dmytro said: “It’s been great to attend this event and meet Ukrainian guests who have just come to Exeter.”
