Community groups prepare to celebrate Queen’s Jubilee in the city centre Ukrainian guests will get special welcome

Ukrainian refugees who have recently arrived in Exeter will be given a special welcome to the city at Exeter’s Jubilee street party celebrations.

On Thursday 2 June, as part of the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, a reading and craft zone will be created on Cathedral Green.

The reading zone will be welcoming hosts and any Ukraine families who have recently moved to Devon to collect a free SMILE bag for their children.

There will also be a host of useful resources available for them including information leaflets, books and activities to help with mental wellbeing.

City Council Leader Phil Bialyk said: “It is great that we are able to extend a warm welcome to Ukrainians in Exeter during the city’s Jubilee celebrations. It will be an excellent opportunity for people to meet and socialise as well obtaining useful advice and resources on the day.”

Maria’s Books has created a range of great free activities for children including stories, magic painting and colouring.

The first 50 children to enter the reading zone will receive a free and fabulous Jubilee activity pack.

The craft zone is one of many community activities planned on Cathedral Green between 11am and 3pm.

There will be opportunities to listen to stories, read books and take away some amazing Usborne books throughout the day.

The big Jubilee celebration takes place on Thursday 2 June in the High Street, Cathedral Green, Princesshay, Guildhall Shopping centre and elsewhere in the city centre, from 11am until 3pm.

Community groups and organisations from across the city will converge on Cathedral Green to take part in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Exeter city centre.

Benches and tables will be set up in the High Street for people to enjoy the Street Party. As well as live music and people can bring their own picnic or click and collect from nearby restaurants. Alcohol is not permitted to be consumed in the High Street.

Music across the city will be provided by The Liberty Sisters, The Footloose Four, Chris Pope, Exeter Railway Band, Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Band and Exeter Jazz Orchestra.

A Beach Bar will be set up in Princesshay Square serving Jubilee inspired drinks during the event.

As part of the celebrations and in partnership with The Battalion of the 6 Rifles, there will be a Military village on Cathedral Green.

The Devon branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity will attend, as will 13 (City of Exeter) Squadron Air Training Corps.

The Devon General Omnibus Trust will be displaying a vintage vehicle – a VDV 817 which dates from 1957. It is representative of the open-platform rear-entrance AEC Regent V double-deckers purchased by Devon General for use on Exeter city services which ran until 1971.

A beacon will be lit at Exeter Quayside in the evening.
