Summer Market celebration marks completion of enhancements to Magdalen Road The Summer Market in Magdalen Road

InExeter will be hosting a special Summer Market to celebrate the recent enhancements made to Exeter’s Magdalen Road.

Visitors will be able to experience the best of Magdalen Road and its local businesses while enjoying stalls, live music and indulging in some exceptional refreshments.

The Summer Market will be held in Magdalen Road on Saturday 1 July, from 2pm until 7pm.

The enhancement scheme was completed by Devon County Council and the one-way extension of the road became permanent in May.

The enhancements include widening the pavements to create a better experience for pedestrians and allowing businesses to utilise more of the outside space.

Ann Hunter, BID Manager at InExeter, said: “It is fantastic to now have these works completed. Magdalen Road is the vibrant village in the heart of our city and these changes to the streetscape have created a fantastic space with café culture and much-enhanced the visitor experience.

“The summer market will be the opportunity to celebrate all that is great about Magdalen Road and the incredible businesses that are there.”

The Summer Market is set to have a real street party atmosphere with the road closed to allow residents and visitors to spill out, browse the stalls and dance along to the music.

A full line-up of music has been programmed by Music in Devon Initiative (MIDI) including Big Noise Chorus, Busker Bernie, Spin 2 and headliner The Ruby May Spencer Band.

The Magdalen Road Summer Market will showcase the vibrant businesses that make this street truly exceptional.

Grocer on the Green will tantalize the taste buds with their delicious strawberries and cream, while Magdalen Road Cheese and Provisions and Smith’s Wine Shop will both be offering tastings.

Maker Maker will entertain visitors with a delightful ukulele performance, and Leaf Street will be showcasing their beautiful fresh flowers whilst Stage and Calvo Loco will be serving up delectable dishes.

Guests can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink at Mount Radford, where they can take advantage of the outdoor seating. Visitors can embrace the summer ambiance and the street performances into the evening.

There will be a Horse Box Bar and stage next to the Sandwiched Inn. As well as a mixture of stalls curated by Markets In Exeter, from hand crafted chocolate and locally made biltong, to French brocante, and vintage clothing.

There will also be salty soap and cosmetics specialist Tappermade, handcrafted mixers from Dazy Drinks, bold furnishings from Emma Hen Designs and recycled seed bombs from Pulp2.

Cllr Carol Whitton, the local County Councillor for the area, will cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the Magdalen Road enhancement scheme.  She said “It is truly amazing to see Magdalen Road shining once again as the centre of the community here in St Leonard’s.

“The extended pavement space is already allowing people to spend more time browsing and soaking up the splendid village atmosphere. The new Magdalen Road is a welcoming and attractive space that I am sure will become a centre for many more community events in the years to come.”
