Staff thanked for keeping Exeter looking good Northernhay Gardens

Staff at Exeter City Council who help make the city centre look good have been praised by a member of the public.

The woman sent staff at the City Council a thank you card and said she had been meaning to get in touch for over a year.

She praised street cleaners for helping maintain the city centre as well as the Council’s public and green space team for its plantings, colourful flower beds and Northernhay Gardens.

On Northernhay she said: “a place of bliss – so glad you maintain these gardens so well from near the library to Queen Street and beyond.”

She also praised the “lovely flowerbed” in Sidwell Street  and the “stunning wall murals”, both installed and managed by InExeter, by the cut-through on Sidwell Street to the bus station, and on Sidwell Street through to the back of St Sidwell’s Church/John Lewis. “Both so colourful and cheering up a very dull area,” she said.

Also gaining praise were the lights on the trees in Sidwell Street, which were imagined, financed and installed by InExeter. “Thank you for keeping them – it has made a huge difference to the atmosphere and pleasantness of Sidwell Street,” she said.

She rounded off the card saying: “Thank you all who make this happen and the wonderful people who maintain it all (and our super street cleaners). It does make a difference and it is worth the money. People do notice and appreciate it. Exeter is better because of it. Thank you.”

Alongside the work of the Council’s parks and cleansing teams, there has been great work in improving areas such as South Street and Sidwell Street undertaken by InExeter through a grant award from Safer Exeter’s Community Sparks fund.

The planters in Sidwell Street which have transformed the area won a Gold Award in the South West Britain in Bloom Awards last year.

Cllr Laura Wright, Deputy Leader of the City Council, said: "The partnership between Exeter City Council and InExeter is so important to make positive changes and celebrate the vibrancy and beauty of our city. It’s lovely to have a member of the public take time to write to tell us how much this work is being noticed and appreciated."

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Place and City Management, said: “Our staff work tirelessly to keep Exeter looking good, so it’s lovely when their efforts are appreciated and acknowledged.”
