New programme of diverse and cultural events set to launch in Exeter

An exciting programme of diverse and cultural events and activities is set to run across Exeter and Devon to improve health and wellbeing, build cross-cultural understanding, and strengthen community relationships.

Backed by National Lottery funding, Exeter Communities Together is a new partnership of seven grass roots organisations in Exeter and Devon.

The partnership consists of Devon Bengali Association, Exeter Hindu Cultural Centre, Exeter Malayalee Association, Filipino Community Association, Italian Cultural Association Exeter and Ubuntu Counselling Services, as well as Exeter Mosque, which will be funded separately via non-Lottery means.

Each partner will deliver a range of activities together, including public cultural celebrations, school and hospital visits, language classes, produce growing and cooking workshops to name but a few. It is an Assets-Based Community Development (ABCD) initiative where existing resources, skills and understanding are used to maximise efficiency and output of community development – a model encouraged by Exeter City Council’s Community Strategy.

Exeter Communities Together is hosting a public project launch event on Thursday (27 June) at Exeter Guildhall from 11.00 to 14.00. At this event, each partner will share a greater flavour of what they will offer to support the overarching aim of allowing black and minority ethnic (BAME) residents in Exeter to have a voice and increased visibility in the wider community.

Exeter City Council Leader Phil Bialyk, is set to attend along with the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Peter Holland.
