New funds available to vulnerable households this winter New funds available

Vulnerable households in Exeter may be able to claim extra support this winter with two new funding schemes being launched.

Applicants can now apply for the Household Support Fund. This initiative is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions through Devon County Council.

In addition to this, people can apply for funding from the Rent Arrears Relief Fund to prevent them from being evicted and becoming homeless.

The government has given Devon just over £5 million for the Household Support Fund to help vulnerable households across the county with essentials over the coming months as the country continues its recovery from the pandemic. The Fund is open until March 2022.

The money will be distributed by the City Council to meet daily needs such as food, clothing, and utilities.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Supporting People, said: “The coronavirus pandemic is putting a big financial strain on so many people and unfortunately this is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

“We are committed to helping people in Exeter and this money will help those who are at risk of struggling to keep up with the bills over the winter.

“I would urge anyone who feels that there are eligible for the fund to visit our website and make an application for funding,” she added.

Anyone finding it hard to afford food or energy costs can apply, regardless of whether they are on benefits or not. Applicants just need to be over the age of 16, living in Exeter and struggling to meet their essential costs.

Some of the things the Fund can help with are:

  • Buying food
  • Paying energy bills or topping up a meter
  • Paying water bills
  • Paying for warm clothing or blankets
  • Essential repairs or replacement of electrical appliances or heating equipment

The Fund can also help if individuals or families are struggling to afford essentials because of rent, mortgage or council tax payments, including arrears.

The Rent Arrears Relief Fund will specifically support low income private renters who are experiencing COVID-related rent arrears, to help prevent them from being evicted and becoming homeless.
