Eastgate market The new Eastgate Market

Eastgate Market, a brand-new street market for Exeter city centre, launches this Friday (19 November).  The event, running from 2pm to 8pm will see live music, street performers, makers, crafters, and traders in a real celebration of Sidwell and Paris Street.

Following the launch market, Eastgate Market will operate year-round every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 2pm to 8pm and take place on Sidwell Street.

Lottie Stanley, InExeter’s Markets Manager said: “We’re thrilled to bring Eastgate Market to Sidwell Street as a brand-new, colourful weekly market. With the revival of the market culture, Eastgate Market will be a fantastic springboard for local, small, sustainable businesses. The market will also complement the independent businesses already on Sidwell Street and neighbouring Paris Street, celebrating this neighbourhood of the city. For lovers of handmade and artisan finds, this market is not to be missed!”

Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure & Physical Activity, said: “This is an exciting new initiative for Exeter. A new market in Sidwell Street is a great addition to the spread of markets throughout the city. I am sure it will be a great success.”

The market is designed to be an incubator space offering new businesses, start-ups, entrepreneurs, and creators a regular space to trade. The market will offer mentoring, next steps business advice and support for traders to develop growth plans.

More than just a market, visitors can expect a diverse and inclusive mix of local traders, both permanent and casual, selling sustainable and ethically created products. Confirmed traders include Onda, who makes ethical childrenswear, maternity and nursing garments, and reusable products; Tapper, who makes traditional, handmade cosmetics from natural ingredients; and Onaii Art, a fine artist who creates afro art, portraits, seascapes and landscapes.

InExeter has commissioned Exeter-based social enterprise Co Create to make the market stalls for Eastgate Market.
