Japanese contingent shown Exeter's carbon cutting initiatives

Published: 22 January 2020

Workers from Japan have been finding out about Exeter

Japanese council workers have been in Exeter finding out how the City Council is doing its bit for the environment.

A contingent from Japan’s Local Government Centre were looking at some of the pioneering projects to cut carbon and save energy as part of a general fact-finding mission to the City Council.

The 4-strong group will now take back what they’ve seen and potentially implement some of Exeter’s ideas across councils in Japan.

The group were shown around the Civic Centre and told about a number of City Council initiatives to place solar panels on its buildings like the Civic Centre, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and the Matford Centre.

They were told how solar panels on car parks such as Mary Arches Street and John Lewis – both run by the City Council – help power electric vehicle charge points.

Exeter has been recognised as a green motoring hotspot according to latest figures from the DVLA, with the highest increase of ultra low emission vehicles (including electric vehicles) across the UK.

The contingent from Japan were also told how the Council is saving money and cutting its carbon emissions by using low energy light bulbs across all of its sites.

The workers were given a presentation about the Water Lane Smart Grid and Battery Storage Project, which will see a huge array of solar panels generating green electricity for the National Grid and provide power for the Council’s fleet of electric vehicles.

The contingent were welcomed to the city by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Peter Holland and members of Full Council. They will also visit Teignbridge District Council.
