Get Digital and take advantage of free online learning

Published: 26 February 2021

Get Digital Get Digital

People in Exeter who feel they are being left behind with all things ‘digital’ can take advantage of free online learning.

Exeter City Council has joined forces with digital skills experts Cosmic to offer up a series of free bite-sized webinars.

Anyone across the city can get involved and benefit from the project, which is being delivered thanks to generous funding from the Howmet Aerospace Foundation and support from the Positive People project.

The introductory webinars will be followed by another series of events aimed specifically at Exeter City Council housing tenants.

The aim of all sessions is to help people in Exeter feel more confident about making the most of the online and digital world. For people of all ages and abilities, the internet and online resources are full of helpful, fun and informative opportunities.

The initiative starts with four one-hour events which are available to join for free. They will teach people more about being safe online, avoiding scams, keeping healthy, communicating with friends and getting creative.

These events will be hosted online, on the Zoom video platform. People will not need an account to join, just a device and an internet connection. A smartphone, tablet or laptop will do.

Cllr Amal Ghusain, Lead Councillor for Communities and Culture, said: “So many opportunities that exist today are available online and in a digital format. More and more services are becoming digital.

“We understand, for many people who have not been brought up in a digital era, that getting to grips with the digital world can be daunting and that’s why we have set up this programme of online learning.”

The Council is conscious of the fact that not everyone will be aware of these sessions and is therefore reaching out to friends and family of those who might be considered suitable for the programme.

The initial free online events are:

  • Tuesday 9 March 11-12 am – Online Safety through COVID: How can we keep ourselves safe through COVID? What scams are out there?
  • Thursday 11 March 2 - 3 pm – Digital wellbeing: How can digital support your wellbeing? How can we manage screen-time for the whole family to keep you all on the right track?
  • Tuesday 16 March 11 -12 am – Communication with friends & family: How can we contact loved ones? What are some of the fun ways we can communicate using online tools?
  • Thursday 18 March 2 - 3 pm – Introduction to Canva: How to make online Birthday cards and Posters for free? Canva is an easy graphic design website that makes you look like a pro!
