Accommodation for families fleeing conflict

Funding has been secured through the Government’s Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF) to purchase eight homes for families who have fled war and conflict.

The Council will be purchasing eight family-sized homes over the next six months and will provide housing to Ukrainian refugees who cannot remain in sponsorship and are at risk of homelessness, along with providing homes to Afghan families who are currently in bridging hotels.

Bindu Arjoon, Chief Executive of Exeter City Council, said: “This funding will reduce pressures on our Housing Needs and Homelessness service, and enables the Council to continue to provide for local households with housing needs.

“This funding ensures that Exeter is able to play its part in helping those families in our community who have been welcomed by our citizens and whose lives have been impacted by war and conflict.”

The Government’s Local Authority Housing Fund provides support to local authorities to help them provide accommodation to families who cannot remain in sponsorship and are at risk of becoming homeless.

It will reduce extra pressures on local housing and homelessness services so they can continue to provide for domestic households with housing needs.

After initial use, the housing will create a lasting legacy for local communities by providing a new and permanent supply of accommodation to help address local housing and homelessness pressures in Exeter.
