Flood defences in place in Exeter ahead of Storm Ciarán Exeter Quay

People are being urged to take extra care as Storm Ciaran brings heavy rain and very strong winds to the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain, in place from 6pm to 11.59pm on Wednesday, and an amber warning of wind, in place from 3am to 11am on Thursday.

In Exeter temporary flood defences have been erected at the Quay. The barriers were put in place on Wednesday morning to protect low lying areas from the possibility of flooding.

The Environment Agency said: “Today in Exeter our field teams deployed temporary flood defences at Exeter Quay ahead of Storm Ciaran.”

A number of events have been cancelled across the city on Thursday. The weekly Farmer’s Market and the city Red Coats tours have both been called off.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Very strong north westerly winds associated with Storm Ciaran could disrupt travel, utilities and may cause some structural damage.”
