Exeter’s leisure service is dedicated to boosting health and wellbeing for all

Published: 19 January 2024

Cllr Duncan Wood

Now is the perfect time for anyone who wants to get fitter and more active to consider becoming an Exeter Leisure member.

The Council-run service provides access to leisure centres across the city. When people join they are met by an instructor who will explain how to use the equipment and facilities and can even set a personal training programme.

Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Physical Activity, said the Council’s leisure centres are a fantastic resource for the communities they serve.

He said: “We have great leisure centres all around the city – Riverside, ISCA Centre, Exeter Arena, Wonford and of course St Sidwell’s Point. People will find fantastic facilities in all of our centres, which are located in the communities where people are.

“There’s a huge range of activities like pickleball, badminton and bowls for people to enjoy – people can join as members or join clubs, use our facilities and get into new sports and activities. It’s a great way of meeting people and getting fit and active at the same time.”

Cllr Wood said continuing to support the city’s leisure service was a key priority for Labour and the City Council it leads.

“The important thing about the Council sustaining these facilities is that it’s about the health and wellbeing of our residents,” he said.

“It’s about allowing people to feel good about themselves, physically and mentally, and having the opportunity to do that regardless of where they live in the city.

“It’s not something that we have to do because it is not a statutory service - it is something that we choose to do because we value the difference that it makes to people’s lives.

“We value what fitness can do to mental health, physical health, life expectancy and the ability to enjoy life. It is all enhanced by people coming to our centres, joining in and getting fit.”
