Some of Exeter’s most fascinating buildings will open their doors free of charge for this year’s annual Heritage Open Days.

Held between 8 and 17 September, Heritage Open Days 2023 will be celebrated at venues across Exeter and the rest of England, showcasing sites that are not usually open to the public or otherwise charge an entry fee.

Managed nationally by the National Trust with financial support from the People’s Postcode Lottery and Historic England, Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event.

It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring local history and culture to life – all for free.

This year Exeter’s famous Red Coats will be offering a series of unique free tours, on subjects ranging from the Exeter Blitz to Royalty in Exeter and Religious Houses of Exeter.

Venues taking part in Heritage Open Days 2023 include RAMM, Underground Passages, Exeter Cathedral, St Stephen’s Church, St Sidwell’s Centre, Exeter Cathedral, St Nicholas Priory, Devon & Exeter Institution, Tuckers Hall, St Michael & All Angels Church, Exeter Community Centre, Custom House, Exeter Phoenix and many more.

Among the many highlights are:

  • Exeter Blitz Devon War Memorial, Cathedral Green – discover how Exeter was affected by the Blitz on a special Red Coat Guided Tour
  • Exeter Cathedral – take a look behind the scenes at Exeter’s best-known and most imposing building, including free tours and access to areas not normally open to the public
  • Exeter Community Centre and St David’s Walking tour – tour the centre and then see and hear about the fascinating history of St David's
  • Exeter Historic Guildhall - the seat of power and democracy in Exeter, learn more about this extraordinary building of outstanding architectural interest, an ancient monument and building right in the city centre
  • Exeter Library – enjoy the special ‘White Glove’ experience and get up close and personal to a selection of books dating back to 1480
  • Exeter’s Underground Passages – the city’s unique subterranean attraction will offer a fascinating tour beneath Exeter’s busy streets

Many of the events are popular and fill up quickly so free booking online is recommended.
