Exeter is getting ready for Summer in the City

Published: 20 April 2023

Exeter Respect Festival is among the events taking place in the city this summer

Summer is just around the corner and there’s a whole heap of things happening in Exeter, with live music, fabulous food and drink, time-old tradition and pomp and ceremony to look forward to.

It’s almost time to dig out the shorts and t-shirts, find the sunglasses and chill out over those summer months, with so much to see and do. Here are a few dates for the diary.

Exeter Respect Festival gets things underway on 10 and 11 June, with live music dance performances and workshops, the popular festival in Belmont Park celebrates diversity and inclusivity.

Exeter Armed Forces Day takes place on 18 June, one week before the national event. There’ll be a parade of veterans, cadets and reservists through the High Street, accompanied by the Salamanca Jazz Band, with Barnstaple Youth Band leading the way.

After the parade, there’ll be a Military Village on Cathedral Green, with lots of stalls, military vehicles, arts and crafts and more.

If it’s a market you’re looking for, the ever-popular Fore Street Flea has something for everyone. People can expect a mixture of stalls from pre-loved clothing and bric-a-brac to artwork and accessories, food, drink and even entertainment.

The Fore Street Flea takes place between 12-4pm in Fore Street on the following days:

Sunday 14 May
Sunday 16 July
Sunday 17 September
Sunday 19 November

Jazz on the Quay is always popular and this year is no different. Enjoy the summer sounds of jazz by the waterside on Sundays throughout the summer, starting on 25 June.

Check out the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust website for a whole host of events happening throughout the summer https://www.exeterquay.org/events/

The age-old tradition of Lammas comes to the city on 6 July, with a parade through the city centre culminating in the big white glove being hoisted up above the beautiful historic Guildhall.

The occasion is also shared with the Exeter Craft Festival taking place on the Cathedral Green between 6 and 8 July, with over 200 exhibitors showcasing their handmade products.

Visitors can browse unique gifts and souvenirs while enjoying live music and street food.
