Damaged Norway maple tree to be felled as it represents a danger to public

A mature tree off Beacon Lane will regrettably have to be felled, the City Council has announced, after an inspection revealed that the tree represents a potential danger to the public.
Two trees will be planted at the site as a replacement for the loss.
The Norway maple, situated on land beside the junction of Calthorpe Road and Beacon Lane, close to the Morrisons supermarket, is showing major defects and an inspection by Devon Tree Services has indicated that the chance of branches falling from the tree onto the nearby road or pavements is very high.
The inspection found structurally compromised branch unions with cracks propagating below the unions.
The City Council does everything possible to maintain its trees and keep the city looking green but has stressed in recent weeks that public safety is paramount when assessing damaged trees.
“Everyone loves trees and we do everything possible to allow them to flourish, however we sometimes have to make some tough decisions and consider the risk that they pose, especially when they have suffered damage over the years,” said Cllr David Harvey, Lead Councillor for Place.
