Council gets behind scheme to help the homeless Exeter Homeless Partnership

Exeter City Council is backing a scheme which gives members of the public an alternative way of making a donation to help homeless people in the city.

The Council will be placing QR codes in all of its buildings -  including leisure centres and the Civic Centre – allowing the public to donate money towards supporting homeless people in Exeter.

The scheme is being run by the Exeter Homeless Partnership (EHP), of which the City Council is a partner. A new campaign is being launched to make people aware of how they can get involved in the initiative.

More than 40 businesses and community groups in the city have already signed up including Stagecoach, White Stuff and Nationwide. The EHP is now looking forward to many more people getting involved in the coming weeks.

Jo Armstrong, of Exeter Homeless Partnership, said: “This is a great way for the local community to get involved in supporting those who are homeless or vulnerably housed and we welcome the opportunity for other organisations and businesses to come forward and join the campaign. Let’s end homelessness in Exeter!”

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Supporting People, said the Council was 100 per cent behind the scheme and was delighted to be promoting it in across all its buildings.

“When people make a donation to the scheme they can be rest assured that the money will go directly to supporting homeless people in the city, whether that’s directly accessing housing services, opportunities for meaningful activities or getting help to address a multitude of issues.”

The new campaign builds on the back of the success of Tap2Give. The original Tap2Give scheme offered an alternative way for people to make donations to support people in Exeter who are experiencing homelessness.

Last year, integrated units allowing people to make donations to the scheme, were installed in the windows at Exeter’s first Giving Hub in Princesshay and in the BrewDog restaurant in the Guildhall Shopping Centre. And this week a unit is being installed in Nationwide Building Society. These units allow people to make a donation 24/7.

There is also a mobile Tap2Give unit currently located in John Lewis, plus an additional two units available for events.
