Council adopts Exeter’s roadmap to a carbon neutral future

Exeter’s Roadmap to a carbon neutral future has been formally adopted by the City Council.
The Council declared a Climate Emergency last year and pledged to work towards creating a Carbon Neutral City by 2030.
Following public consultation, Exeter City Futures was tasked with creating a Roadmap highlighting the practical steps that will need to be taken in the city to achieve carbon neutrality in the next decade.
The Roadmap, called the Net Zero Exeter 2030 Plan, was recently supported by the Executive and was formally adopted at a meeting of the full council on Tuesday night.
Cllr Rachel Sutton, Lead Councillor for Climate and Culture, said she was delighted that the Roadmap has been formally adopted by the Council.
She said: “The Roadmap is crucial in highlighting the steps that will need to be taken if we are to achieve the ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
“We will put the Roadmap absolutely at the front and centre of everything we do. It will be essential as the city recovers from the coronavirus crisis.”
Cllr Sutton added: “I know it is going to be a challenge, but I am really optimistic. We have so many key players and organisations signed up to this, if everyone adopts the changes that we need we can make this happen. We have made great strides already but there is a long way to go.”
Andrew Hardwick, newly appointed Managing Director of Exeter City Futures, said: “We are delighted to hear that Exeter City Council have now officially adopted Exeter City Futures’ Net Zero Exeter 2030 Plan.
“In doing so, Exeter now has a guiding framework to achieving its ambition of being carbon neutral by 2030.
“My key role as new Managing Director, will be to build upon the already fantastic work that has been carried out by Exeter City Futures to date and now work together with everyone in Exeter to turn the Net Zero Exeter 2030 Plan into collaborative, practical action. This has to be our top priority and the ultimate measure of success.”
