Community-spirited litter pickers praised by Council

Published: 5 October 2020

Council officials have been heartened by the number of requests from community groups and individuals to hire litter-picking equipment to tidy up their neighbourhoods.

Last month Exeter City Council hired out 120 litter-pickers to the community – the equivalent of four pickers every day.

Cllr David Harvey, Lead Councillor for Environment and City Management, said he was bowled over by the efforts of people wanting to tidy up their own communities.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has made an effort to make their neighbourhoods look better by making use of this equipment. There are so many community-spirited people in Exeter – it’s great to see that they want to keep Exeter looking good,” he added.

The Council can loan out – free of charge – litter pickers, gloves, bags and hi-vis jackets to groups or individuals.

Last month was Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British September Clean, with the group encouraging people to organise private clean-ups with up to five other family members or friends or do their own individual clean-up as part of the event.

The City Council makes available its equipment all-year round. Anyone interested is urged to call 01392 262633.
