Caring for the future: Exeter’s pioneering extra care scheme is a UK first

The UK’s first Passivhaus extra care scheme is on schedule to open in Exeter in the Autumn.

The scheme - located off Topsham Road – will offer 53 one and two bedroom apartments, including fully wheelchair accessible homes, for residents over 55 with care needs.

Work started on Exeter’s first Extra Care scheme at the very end of 2018, the ground works and the structure of the building are now completed.

The scheme, known as Edwards Court, is expected to be finished and ready for occupation in September 2020.

There is an identified need for 201 extra care apartments within Exeter. Extra care housing is self-contained properties with on-site care and support.

The care and support is provided by professional care staff regulated by the Care Quality Commission. All services are flexible and can be increased or decreased as required.

The scheme includes a large selection of communal facilities, including lounges, library area, hobby spaces, hairdresser and treatment rooms, assisted bathroom, café and dining area together with landscaped gardens.

As this is very specialist accommodation, the City Council is currently out to tender to find a partner to operate the facility and provide the care required for the occupants.
