There’s still a chance for young people in Exeter to get involved in an exciting opportunity to help encourage wildlife on their doorstep.

Devon Wildlife Trust, who manage six Valley Parks in Exeter on behalf of the City Council, are on the look-out for Youth Rangers to help wildlife flourish in the city. Places are still available.

The role is a voluntary one for young people aged 13 to 18 years. Youngsters will need to commit to one Saturday morning a month, as well as some time during the holidays, to carry out practical tasks such as coppicing (cutting small trees to allow regrowth), path clearance, tree planting, removal of invasive species and other tasks.

There will be opportunities to learn more about the wildlife around and how to identify it. Rangers will learn how to undertake wildlife surveys to help monitor the wildlife and there will be opportunities to help with family events and carry out litter picks.

As part of the role, young people will be able to make an active contribution to aid wildlife on their doorstep, as well as helping other people’s access and ability to enjoy the city’s green spaces.

No specific skills are needed, just a willingness to give it a try.

Devon Wildlife Trust said: “This is an exciting time to join as a young volunteer as we pilot our new youth programme, by becoming involved with this group, you can help shape the way we move things forward and share what other project ideas you may want to see that involve young people.”
