A personal programme is a great way for gym members to get extra motivated

Anyone joining Exeter Leisure is now being offered a complete personal fitness programme and new insights into how exercise is great for health and wellbeing.

Members using the gym at St Sidwell’s Point can take advantage of a scanner which can measure things like body fat and muscle tissue, which can be better indicators of the benefits of exercise than weight loss.

All Exeter Leisure gym members can take advantage of a free eight-week personalised programme which helps them to set goals and maintain the motivation needed to succeed.

Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor of Leisure and Physical Activity, said New Year is a great time to become a Leisure member and take advantage of the facilities and expertise available in the city.

He said: “At this time of year lots of people are coming into the gym for the first time or returning after a long break. There’s a new initiative which means you get induction to use the equipment as usual, but we can also produce an eight-week programme of structured training.

“People talk through their aims with the professionals and a scanning equipment lets people know the changes that are happening to their body.

“It enables people to build in more motivation into their plans by having the information they need about the difference exercise is making to their body.”

As a result of exercise, weight may not initially change, and some gym users can become demotivated and stop taking part.

But using sophisticated scanning reveals the bigger picture, by assessing body fat percentage, lean muscle tissue and visceral fat, which is the fat around internal organs.

It can reveal the major benefits that regular exercise can bring.

Cllr Wood added: “We have gyms across the city, at Wonford, ISCA, Riverside and St Sidwell’s Point. There is nothing like exercise to make you feel good about yourself and help you to deal with all the other challenges of life.

“Being fit is a real life changing thing, so it would be great to see as many people as possible come and join in and use our facilities – we’d love to see you.”
