Workouts from home initiative proves a hit

Published: 9 February 2021

Efforts to keep people active during ‘lockdown’ are paying off in Exeter with a programme of workouts from home proving popular.

In just over a week, 1,000 people have already downloaded the Exeter Leisure App, which allows them to effectively bring the energy of the leisure centre into their front room.

“We’re delighted with the response,” said Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure and Physical Activity.

“It’s frustrating that we can’t open up our leisure centres because of ‘lockdown’ but we wanted to keep the new vibe that Exeter Leisure has brought about going, since we took over the leisure contract. This initiative allows people to bring the workout classes into their own homes and it’s worked well,” he added.

The response from customers has been good. One user said: “I have just done the BodyCombat with Jake. I forgot how much I love it! Thank you Jake for a fantastic workout! Amazing idea, doing it for free online! Even managed to rope my teenage niece into doing it with me! I'll be back again on Saturday for another one!"

Exeter Leisure is the new health and fitness side of Exeter City Council, since it took its leisure facilities back in-house towards the end of last year.

With Exeter Leisure’s ‘Workout @home’ feature on the new ‘Exeter Leisure’ App, people can stay fit, healthy and happy from the comfort of their own home.

Exeter Leisure ‘Workout @home’ is free to everyone, not just Exeter Leisure members. With exclusive home workout programmes, ‘Live Streamed Classes’ straight from the studio and ‘On Demand’ Les Mills classes, there is something for everyone.

There’s also online coaching for Exeter Leisure members. Start with a 1:1 consultation with one of Exeter Leisure’s Fitness Instructors, where they will create a bespoke programme based on personal goals and the kit/space available to users.

Programmes can be specifically adapted for home workouts, with no equipment necessary, so people don’t need to worry if they don’t have any.

Instructors will then keep in regular contact and provide all the motivation and support needed to stay on track.

For those more into group exercise, there’s the chance to join one of the Class Instructors as they live stream classes straight from the studio.  With Yoga, Legs, Bums and Tums, HiiT Conditioning and Pilates to choose from, plus Les Mills favourites such as BODYATTCK, BODYCOMBAT and BODYBALANCE, there is something for everyone.

By downloading the ‘Exeter Leisure’ App, there is also the opportunity to sign up for an exclusive 60-day free trial to ‘Les Mills on Demand’ and access over 1,000 online workouts.

Exeter Leisure ‘Workout @home’ is free to everyone. Download the Exeter Leisure app to find out more and book spaces.
