Working with homeless people in Exeter

Around 50 staff from a variety of agencies took part in a training event for professionals working with homeless people in Exeter.

The Housing Legislation training event was for partner agencies who work with within the City to tackle homelessness for some of the city’s most vulnerable people. 

Present were colleagues from BCHA (Gabriel House) Julian House (Outreach and Night Shelter staff) St Petrocks, Adult social care, Together Drug and Alcohol, DPT staff, IDVA (domestic violence experts) Sanctuary Supported living team.

The training was held at St James’ Park and was run by Andy Gale, a well-known housing expert who would normally train housing officers.

He said not many local authorities provide training for their partner agencies, but it is good practise to ensure agencies work with and understand the duties that the local authority holds, as well as the decisions it make and why it makes them.

Information was also shared on how agencies can assist clients to better understand the challenges faced by local authorities.  The City Council is hoping to host more events in the upcoming months.
