Women and girls invited to give baseball a go at open day Women and girls invited to give baseball a go

Women who fancy hitting a home run are being invited to have a go at baseball at a special open day in Exeter later this month.

Exeter Spitfires Baseball Club have organised a fun day full of activities at King George v Playing Fields in Exeter on Sunday 30 June.

The day is pitched at women players aged 14 years and above and starts at 10am with an open to all tee-ball game, baseball skills instruction and practice.

Everyone is welcome to come and there will be an exhibition game with the first pitch at 1pm.

Exeter Spitfires were formed in 2000 but initially struggled due to a lack of teams in the region. In 2012 they reformed and now play in the Westcountry Baseball League against teams from Plymouth, Truro, Newton Abbott, Wellington, and Yeovil. The club has around 40 members.

The Club receives some of its funding from ticket sales from the Exeter Community Lottery.

The open day has been organised by the Club with sponsorship from This Girl Can, Exeter City Women and Exeter City Council.

Charlotte Crews, of the Spitfires, said: “Baseball is a sport for all, ages, shapes, and sizes. It’s one of the things I love most about this sport, as well as being part of a team and having fun whilst keeping active. I’d whole-heartedly encourage any woman to come and have go or just come and meet your local baseball team, watch a game, and grab an ice cream!”

The Club train on King George V during the summer and then inside on Wednesday evenings throughout the winter.

A new baseball pitch is currently being built on land at Bromham’s Farm Fields next to the Exeter Canal.
