Volunteers helping to preserve a unique piece of Exeter history

Volunteers helping to preserve a unique piece of Exeter history Exeter volunteers

Volunteers have been helping to commemorate the lives of those who served their country while preserving a unique part of the city’s heritage.

The historic Guildhall is preparing to exhibit thousands of beautiful fabric poppies, each a tribute to those who lost their lives during the First World War.

Inspired by the poignant displays at Devon County Show 2017 and Chelsea Flower Show 2016, the poppies embody remembrance and tell a story of sacrifice and solidarity.

The unique fabric poppy display is due to be exhibited at the historic Guildhall between 4 November and 9 November, ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Over the years many of the poppies have come adrift from their backing, and extra help was required to ensure they are fit for display.

The work is being coordinated by local members of Exeter Heritage Volunteers, who have a passion for restoring historic artefacts. Last year the volunteers spent time polishing and restoring a wide range of historic silver items at the Guildhall.

Estelle Buckridge, Volunteer Manager for Exeter Heritage Volunteers, said: “We have had some lovely volunteers who are helping to repair this poppy display. They are all part of scheme called Exeter Heritage Volunteers, which is a project set up by a group of heritage organisations in Exeter, including the historic Guildhall, Exeter Cathedral and RAMM.

“We have been encouraging volunteers to come forward and sign up for different exciting heritage projects across the city and they have been helping to preserve and clean items and help organise specials events, while gaining some access to special areas and taking part in some exclusive tours.”

The restored work will be on display 4-9 November. Please check opening times at the historic Guildhall during these dates to attend.

* The Exeter Heritage Volunteers Programme is a pilot programme funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Exeter Heritage Partnership Network, supported by Exeter City Council.
