Support Fairtrade at Exeter’s historic Guildhall

Exeter celebrates Fairtrade Fortnight on Saturday 5 March with a coffee morning in the presence of the Lord Mayor at the city’s historic Guildhall.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 21 February to 6 March. It’s an opportunity for thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow food and drinks, mine gold and grow the cotton in everyone’s clothes - the people who are often exploited and underpaid.

Exeter has been a Fairtrade City since being awarded the status in 2004.

Fairtrade is a system of certification that aims to ensure a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient. For farmers and workers, Fairtrade means workers’ rights, safer working conditions and fairer pay. For shoppers it means high quality, ethically produced products.

Announcing the Council's support for Fairtrade Fortnight, Lead Councillor for Communities and Culture, Cllr Amal Ghusain, said: “Fairtrade certification means guaranteed prices and support for communities through an additional social premium, while for shoppers it means high quality, ethically produced products.”

 “By choosing Fairtrade, Exeter citizens can show they stand for fairness and support for farmers in the developing world, who face some of the biggest social and environmental challenges.”

“Choosing Fairtrade, people can help change the world a little bit for the better every day.”

Exeter’s Fairtrade Coffee Morning will run between 10am and 1pm, offering people the chance to meet the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Trish Oliver, buy some Fairtrade cakes, drink some Fairtrade tea and coffee and make a donation to the Fairtrade Foundation.
