A food safety and hygiene course is being run by the City Council

A course for catering and retail employees leading to an industry-recognised certificate in food safety and hygiene is being run by the City Council next month.

The Level 2 award in Food Safety and Hygiene is aimed at anyone thinking of starting a new food business and wanting to find out more about gaining a good food hygiene rating.

It will also appeal to any businesses with employees who want to find out more about food hygiene and enable them to obtain an industry-recognised certificate.

The Council is delivering a Level 2 award in Food Safety and Hygiene at The Matford Centre, Matford Park Road, on Wednesday 1 February.

The objective of this course is to cover the principles of food hygiene for food handlers working in either a catering or retail environment.

The qualification is also suitable for learners and employees engaged in other food-based vocational training and employment.

The one-day course will be held from 9.30am to 5pm. Lunch is not provided. The cost is £55.

Topics covered include:

  • Basic bacteriology
  • Food poisoning
  • Personal hygiene
  • Food contamination
  • Food storage and temperature control
  • Pest control
  • Design of premises and equipment
  • Cleaning
  • Law and management
  • Examination

The course ends with a short multiple-choice test where candidates will need to achieve 20 correct answers from the 30 questions to receive the Royal Society for Public Health level 2 award in Food Safety in Catering certificate.

An oral option is available for those who require this – it should be stated at the time of booking whether an oral examination is required. In the event that this can’t be provided on the day of the course, attendees may be asked to return for the examination at a later date.
