Residents urged not to leave glass beside full recycling banks

People in Exeter are being encouraged not to leave glass bottles around recycling banks in the city and to take them home instead if the banks are full.

The request comes following the breakdown of the Council’s glass collection lorry.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Recycling & Waterways, apologised for the inconvenience the breakdown has caused. She said: “We are doing everything we can to clear glass from sites around the city and to limit the impact this will have on residents, but please do not leave your glass on the floor around the banks.”

Cllr Williams said they did not have the capacity to clear the sites of loose glass on a regular basis without it impacting on other vital services but were planning to put in other measures to help with the backlog.

“We appreciate the situation isn’t ideal, and that there have been ongoing issues recently with glass collections around Exeter. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and our staff are doing all they can to manage the situation while our specialised vehicle is repaired,” she added.

As with other local authorities across the country, the City Council is currently having issues with driver shortages.

Cllr Williams thanked people in advance for taking their glass home again if the banks are full. “We will update everyone as soon as we have more news,” she added.
