The search is on to find Batonbearers in Exeter for this summer’s Queen’s Baton Relay to mark the start of this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Organisers are looking for 2,022 Batonbearers, each with inspiring stories, to take on the special experience of carrying the Queen’s Baton this summer. The Queen’s Baton Relay will travel to every region in England, before arriving at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on 28 July 2022.

People are being asked to nominate individuals who have met the following criteria:

  • Always willing to take on a challenge and have a unique and inspiring story;
  • Have made a meaningful contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, or charity;
  • Are a figure of inspiration that positively challenges others to achieve their best;
  • Has taken on a challenge or cause and made a positive impact within their community.

The closing date for nominations in 14 February.

Exeter City Council is backing the search for Batonbearers.

Cllr Duncan Wood, Lead Councillor for Leisure & Physical Activity, said: “In Exeter there are dozens of sports clubs and groups who rely on the selfless actions of coaches and volunteers who give up their free time to help others. These are the sort of people that the organisers of the Queen’s Baton Relay are after.”

Cllr Amal Ghusain, Lead Councillor for Communities & Culture, said: “There are so many community groups and organisations across the city that make a difference to the lives of so many people.

“Within those groups there are inspirational figures who throw their energy and passion into helping others. This is a chance for people in Exeter to nominate our neighbourhood heroes for this very special event.”

People can’t nominate themselves and nominees must be 12 years or older on 2 June (the first day of the Relay).
