Make sure you’re ready to vote in the General Election General Election 2024

People in Exeter are being encouraged to check that they’re ready to vote in the fast approaching General Election.

The Prime Minister has confirmed that a General Election will take place on Thursday 4 July. Polling stations across the city will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day.

However, people need to ensure that they’re on the electoral register if they want to vote. There’s still time to register, but the deadline is Tuesday 18 June. It’s simple to register, just visit the GOVUK website https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to do so.

On the day of the election, everyone voting at a polling station will need to ensure they show photo ID.

There are a number of accepted forms of ID that can be shown at the polling station. This includes:

  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Blue Badge (with a photo)
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

For a full list of accepted ID, along with more information about the requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID, go to exeter.gov.uk/voterid

However not everyone chooses to vote at a polling station. In Exeter thousands opt for a postal vote. Postal vote applications are now open, with the deadline for applications being Wednesday 19 June. To apply for a postal vote, also visit the GOV.UK website
