Leap into action with a Summer of sport and physical activity Summer of sport and physical activity

A summer of free physical and sports activities in Exeter gets underway this Sunday (15 May) with free Badminton and walking sessions at Wonford Sports Centre.

The programme is being launched by Inclusive Exeter in partnership with Live & Move, the Sport England Local delivery Pilot for Exeter and Cranbrook, designed to make lives better by encouraging people to be more physically active every day.

Run by members of the various ethnic minority based community groups and associations, under the Inclusive Exeter umbrella, the activities aim to reach people from those communities for whom access to sports facilities and group activities can be limited or present certain social or language barriers.

The Day, which starts at 3pm, will see the first sessions of the Badminton group put together by Babu of the Devon Bangladeshi Association at Wonford Sports Centre. These will continue to run, each Sunday, and are proving to be very popular already.

The first of the Inclusive Exeter ‘well being’ park walks will also start from the centre on Sunday. Lasting for about an hour, they are a gentle but effective way of getting some exercise, fresh air and meeting new people. Just turn up on the day and join in. Regular Park Walks will be taking place over the coming months from Wonford and St Thomas.

Other activities over the Summer include Volleyball, held at the Riverside centre every week and led by members of Exeter's Afghan community. There will be Zumba classes, run by Filipino Association, every weekend at Newtown Community Hall and women's Yoga sessions, held at The Mint Methodist Centre, each week.

All activities are free and open to anyone, and are a great way to get more active, meet people and improve both physical and mental health in the process.
