The City Council’s Law Library, a large collection of legal reference books, has been donated to charity.

As the Council becomes more agile and flexible, it has decided to dispose of its long-established law library at the Civic Centre.

This collection has been built up over many decades, some of the books dating back to the early nineteenth century.

While the books and encyclopaedias were expensive to buy, they now have little commercial value.

Various charities were approached in an effort to ensure the books will be put to good use rather than be destroyed. After considering various options it has been agreed that the books will be heading to Book-Cycle, an international charity based in Exeter and  run by volunteers.

The charity has pledged to put the books to good use, to further the education of those in the developing world and elsewhere.

Volunteers from the charity picked up the law books from the basement of the Civic Centre, ably assisted by two of the Council’s Legal apprentices, Max Murphy and Chris Garlick.
