How to manage your household waste

Published: 27 March 2020

With most of you now staying at home, we know some of you will be putting more stuff in your green and grey bins.  Our collection crews are working hard to keep the rubbish and recycling services running as normal,  and you can help them in the following ways:

We can still take your extra recycling if your green bin fills up.  Additional CLEAN cardboard, paper, plastic packaging and tins and cans be placed in carrier bags or bin bags next to your green bin on recycling day.  Please label the extra bags ‘recycling’ and do keep on recycling – it supports the UK economy at this difficult time and it frees up capacity for disposing of the rubbish that cannot be recycled

If your rubbish bin is full, our collectors will take ONE extra sack of ‘side waste’ per household on rubbish collection day.  This is for domestic rubbish only – items such as food waste, tissues etc.  If you have bulky items, DIY waste etc, please hang on to this until the local Recycling Centres are able to reopen.  Do not put any recycling in your rubbish bin.

Any extra waste you present needs to be double bagged to protect our crews – they won’t know which households are infected or in self isolation so it’s best if everyone does this, and it applies to rubbish AND recycling

If you have symptoms of coronavirus, please follow our essential advice on storing and presenting your waste for collection: https://exeter.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/bin-collections/coronavirus-and-waste-guidance/

If you are able to leave your house as part of your essential journey for shopping or work, or your daily local exercise, you can still take glass bottles and jars to a bottle bank.  Plan your trip responsibly and use a local facility: https://exeter.gov.uk/recyclingbanks/
