Holocaust Memorial Day

Published: 21 January 2022

Exeter’s historic Guildhall will be lit up purple on Thursday 27 January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The Guildhall will join landmark buildings across the country that are marking the occasion and remembering those who lost their lives as a result of the Holocaust as well and other genocides around the world.

There will also be a Commemoration Ceremony at Exeter Cathedral, which the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Trish Oliver, will attend and light a candle along with other dignitaries and representatives and local school children.

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. It promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

The event at Exeter Cathedral will be livestreamed and recorded for playback.
