Exeter City Council has welcomed the news that businesses in the city have backed a Business Improvement District.

Businesses in Exeter voted in favour of the BID, which will continue to operate for the next five years.

Exeter’s BID is run by InExeter and is responsible for promoting business within the city centre.

First brought in in 2015, the BID takes a levy from shops and businesses and in return organises and finances events like the Christmas lights switch-on.

Cllr David Harvey, Lead Councillor for Environment and City Management, said the news was great for the city centre and Exeter as a whole.

“The BID is essential for maintaining a thriving city centre and financing events like the Christmas Lights switch-on. The BID is the heart-beat of our business community and having InExeter onboard for years to come allows our city centre to continue to thrive for shoppers and visitors alike.”
