Garden waste collections take away the hassle of a trip to the tip

Garden Waste Bin Brown bin garden waste collections take the hassle out of the tip

With spring just around the corner and more and more people enjoying their gardens during ‘lockdown’, now might be a good time to take advantage of the City Council’s garden waste collections.

Exeter City Council’s garden waste crew has started its fortnightly collections of clippings and trimmings in brown bins right from the end of people’s driveways or gates.

It’s a service the Council has provided for many years, and one that thousands of Exeter residents benefit from.

Cllr David Harvey, Lead Councillor for City Management, said now was perfect time to sign up for collections: “Most people are staying at home at the moment in line with government guidance. But even when we come out of lockdown, instead of loading up your car with grass-cuttings, hedge-trimmings and other clippings and carting them off to the recycling centre, why not simply hire a brown bin for a full year and know that their garden waste will be collected from their house once a fortnight.”

The service is particularly handy right now, with so many people staying home and journeys limited.

A large 240 litre brown bin, collected fortnightly, costs just £48.80 for the year. That’s less than £2.20 per collection.

And for those who don’t think they will fill a large bin, the Council has 140 litre bins available at just £37.15 per year. That’s under £1.65 per collection!

What’s more, after Coastal Waste has shredded all the garden waste, it is composted on Devon farms before being spread on the land – improving the soil and giving crops a much needed nutrient boost.
