Early Morning Sweep Team keep Exeter looking good

Published: 18 October 2019

Road Sweepers A clean sweep - these guys clear up after the 'night before'

Rain or shine, seven days a week, the Early Morning Sweep Team are out there, keeping Exeter’s city centre clean and looking good.

The Sweep Team clear up after the ‘night before’, starting early and making sure the High Street and its surrounding roads are free of empty bottles and takeaway wrappers from the previous night.

They also sweep up any split refuse or trade waste bags that have been picked open by the seagulls. The Team gather up to two tonnes of rubbish every day.

The Team, who start at 6am, were this week singled out for the great work they do in, receiving the Highly Commended accolade at the 37th Tidy Exeter Group Ambassador & Personality of the Year Awards.

Praising the Early Morning Sweep Team, the citation reads: “The round is two hours of continuous hard work picking up after the revellers and late night licensing from the night before.

“With ripped open waste bags scattered down fore street, cardboard and paper on the high street in doorways, often the city centre looks more like a waste transfer site than a tourist destination, and yet by 9am every day, 364 days of the year, that mess has been cleared and residents and tourists would never know what state their pavements were in just minutes before.”
