Council celebrates awards success for its housing retrofit work

Exeter’s retrofit housing programme has been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony.
The City Council won two of the major categories – Regional Landlord of the Year and Regional Large Scale Project of the Year at the South West Energy Efficiency Awards 2023.
It was commended in the Regional Council of the Year award.
The awards were for the Council’s ambitious housing retrofit programme, which is expanding in the city, improving living conditions and providing affordable warmth for tenants.
Retrofitting includes energy cutting measures including exterior wall insulation, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, new windows and doors and draft proofing measures, as well as heat pumps and solar panel installation.
Cllr Barbara Denning, Lead Councillor for Council Housing, said: “Our team at the Council works so hard to secure funding to retrofit our Council properties, which makes a big difference in improving the quality of life for our residents.
“I am so pleased that this success has been recognised through these awards and want to congratulate the whole team for all of their efforts in making Labour-led Exeter a leading local authority in this area.”
The Regional Landlord of the Year Award rewards one exceptional landlord in each of the 11 regional areas around the UK that has shown a true commitment to energy efficiency within their region.
The award recognises the efforts of that organisation and seeks to thank them for their service to their local community.
The Regional Large Scale Project of the Year Award rewards one exceptional project, in each of the 11 regional areas around the UK, where energy efficiency measures of more than £250,000 have been installed.
The award recognises the efforts of all those involved locally in delivering a successful large scale energy saving project, while maintaining excellent customer service that demonstrates a high standard of quality workmanship throughout the project.
More than 400 Council properties have been retrofitted in Exeter - saving money for tenants on their fuel bills at a time of spiralled energy costs and also cutting carbon emissions.
Funding was recently secured for a further 245 Council houses in Exeter to be fully retrofitted to improve their energy efficiency over the next two years.
The programme is designed to save residents money on fuel bills and lower the city’s carbon footprint by reducing carbon emissions.
The City Council has also been shortlisted for the Green Homes Upgrade of the Year in the prestigious Unlock Net Zero Live Awards. The winners will be announced at a sustainable awards ceremony taking place alongside Housing 2023 in Manchester in June.
