Beware of bogus callers claiming to be from the council
Published: 3 September 2020

Residents have been warned against the threat of bogus callers claiming to be from the Council and attempting to gain access to properties.
A resident in Thornberry Avenue reported receiving a knock on her door on Thursday afternoon from a man claiming he represented Exeter City Council, and was there to check her smoke alarm or smoke detector.
The Council will never send anyone to a property for safety checks without a prior appointment being made, and formal identification will always be shown.
After failing to produce relevant identification the caller was turned away, and the resident informed the Council.
