A waste and recycling update from Denis the Dustcart

In his regular feature, Denis the Dustcart talks about waste and recycling during the current lockdown and how we can all make sure we manage our waste well.

In these uncertain times it’s good to have confidence at least in the services that help to keep our households functioning.

We all use our bins every day, and there are times when we have other things to move on – things that we didn’t clear out during Lockdown 1.

Our aim is to keep waste collections running smoothly for everyone in Exeter and to keep it as easy as possible for everyone to recycle everything they can.

So, with that said, here’s an update on your waste and recycling services.

Stay safe.

• Rubbish and recycling is being collected as normal. Please continue to put out your waste after 6pm on the evening before your usual collection day, but before 6am on the day itself.
  • Please check in regularly with exeter.gov.uk/suspendedcollections, where we will provide updates and information should it be necessary to suspend or delay any collections.
• Please park considerately. We appreciate parking can be tight with so many people at home for most of the time, but avoiding parking on corners and leaving your car as close to the kerb as possible will help us to avoid collection delays.
• Garden waste collections will resume as normal at the end of January for subscribers. Please check your collections online nearer the time for your first collection date: gov.uk/bincollections. To subscribe to the service, visit exeter.gov.uk/gardenwaste.
• Devon County Council’s Recycling Centres remain open for essential journeys, including those in Exeter (Exton Road and Pinbrook Lane).
• Collections of bulky waste by Exeter City Council are continuing and can be booked online at gov.uk/specialcollections.
• Our glass, paper and carton banks are open and should be used during your once daily exercise or during an essential trip to a supermarket.
• Keep recycling. It helps to keep the local economy going and will ensure the black rubbish bins are not overfilled, preventing waste spillage and ensuring that the Waste to Energy plant is not overburdened.
• Disposable masks and gloves are not recyclable and should be secured in your black bin or in a litter bin for disposal. Wherever possible, a reusable mask should be worn and washed to avoid waste.
